Zaven Khachaturian is a consultant, lecturer and an author. He is the former Director, Office of Alzheimer’s Disease Research - National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the former Associate Director, Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging Program (NNA) - National Institution on Aging (NIA), NIH.
During his tenure at the NIH he played a key role in planning, developing and administering many of the, now well established, national programs of research on Alzheimer’s disease and brain aging. He is generally recognized as the godfather of neurobiology of aging research and the chief architect of the Alzheimer’s disease research programs supported by the U.S. Government. He was responsible for building national infrastructure for clinical research. While serving as a program developer and director at NIA, he recruited many new investigators to the field and served as a mentor; in the early careers of numerous current opinion leaders in Alzheimer’s disease and neurobiology of aging research.
Now, as a consultant he provides guidance to universities, foundations, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and nursing homes in program evaluation, planning, and development. He assists in formulating strategies for fund raising, media relations, marketing, and legislative initiatives. He maintains a full schedule as an author, translating science to lay consumers, and as a public speaker on such topics as: Aging, Alzheimer’s disease, Politics of Science, Prospects of Preventing Disabilities of Aging, Barriers to the Development of Effective Treatments, Revolutions in Models of Care and Future Trends in Research. He serves on the editorial boards of several publications and the advisory committees of many organizations. Currently he serves as Senior Medical and Scientific Advisor to the Alzheimer’s Association. He is a former member of the FDA Peripheral and Central Nervous System (PCNS) Advisory Committee and now he serves as an ad hoc consultant to that committee. |

AD is a multigenic disease i.e., several alternative etiologic factors (paths) lead to the disease; among these metabolic dysfunctions are a major contributing factor. |
